A Day in the life of : Fashion Editor

How do start your day?

I wake up at 6:30am then jump straight in the shower. At the moment I’m testing an Eve Lom cleanser for our beauty editor. Despite popular belief I don’t own lots of clothes. I’m ruthless, if I don’t wear something for more than a year I take it to the charity shop. Usually I’ll pack my heels to wear in the office but if I’ve got lots of press shows to attend (some days I’ll have up to 15), flats are a must!

What does your typical working day involve?
What I love about my job is that no two days are the same. They are insanely busy and incredibly varied which means I never get bored. Once or twice a week I’ll have a breakfast meeting with a fashion PR to discuss their new collection or product launch. If I’ve got a photo shoot coming up I will be looking for locations and props and calling-in clothing samples. Another day could be spent mostly writing fashion features or in our fashion cupboard styling up outfits for shoots. The day after a photo shoot I will spend most of it editing all the images. It’s not easy editing 1,000 images down to just 10 but with experience it becomes a lot easier.

What is the one thing you can’t live without?
My camel wrap coat. I’ve literally worn it every day for about 5 years. It’s so elegant but still cool and super-versatile – I have yet to find an outfit it doesn’t go with! Each winter I vow to buy a new one but I just never seem to find a coat quite like it. When it’s warm I roll the sleeves up to make them three-quarter and leave the coat open, in winter I slip on a jacket underneath and belt up – the extra layer keeps me cosy.

Who is your style icon?
My style crush is Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s creative director. Her personal style is tailored, sharp and sexy. She effortlessly layers colour, print and texture together but still manages to look cool and polished at the same time.

What is your signature style?
Classic with a modern, unexpected twist.

What are your staple wardrobe pieces?
I’m obsessed with my metallic brogues, leopard print flats and stripy tops. They’re as necessary in your wardrobe as a great pair of black trousers or dark blue jeans. I also love wearing my casually cool black leather Ash hi-top trainers. I’m now on to my 3rd pair as I wore the others until they had holes in the sole and my feet became wet when it rained.

What’s playing on your iPod at the moment?

What is the last thing you do at night?

My hands get incredibly dry so I slather on L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream. It smells delicious and leaves my hands super smooth.

What do you get up to on the weekend?

My husband and I have just recently had an extension on our Victorian terrace house so most weekends at the moment are spent hanging curtains and blinds, painting fence panels and buying new furniture and light fittings. If we’re not doing house projects we’ll walk along the river to Richmond and have lunch at one of my favourite places, Petersham Nurseries Cafe.
